Andrew Broughton

Sadly Andrew died on New Year's Day. He was a lovely man and also a hard-working pioneer for improving services to deaf children. He had agreed to be our keynote speaker at the October Conference but unfortunately it was postponed to March. I wanted him to share with Educational Audiologists his amazing innovations in Shropshire, Telford & Wreakin to inspire them to see what could be done in their areas.

His funeral was yesterday (13th Jan) but there is a service of thanksgiving and celebration for Saturday 30th Jan at 2 pm in the Wellington Methodist Church. Take a particular memory you have of Andrew to share with his family and friends

There is also a Guest Book on the website of the Shropshire Star where you can read tributes by those who knew him and add your own comments if you wish. The family will be able to print this off in time as a happy memory of him.

Jobs and skills audit
At the 2008 Conference, there was a lively discussion about what the Educational Audiologist's role is. It is clear that Ed Auds have different responsibilities in different Authorities, each making use of our specialist skills. It was suggested that we should conduct an audit of the range of responsibilities, pay, skills etc of Educational Audiologists working for Local Authorities.

The audit can be downloaded below in either MS Word or PDF format.

FM Working Group Survey
As requested by Mary Hostler, here is the link to the FM survey being carried out by the FM working group about current provision. The information will inform lobbying to obtain better funding. This is clearly a cause worth the effort of providing the statistics, and members (and non-members!) are encouraged to join in. http://www.fmworkinggroup.org.uk/

PROPOSED STATEMENT OF RIGHTS FOR DEAF AND HEARING-IMPAIRED CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES
This draft statement is offered to the Association for consideration. The proposal is that the BAEA should present this statement to the Government to accept as a requirement for Local Authorities and hearing aid providers. It could be supported by known examples where deaf children have had very poor or bad service from hospitals or Authorities, where advice from an Educational Audiologist has not been sought or taken. Peter Keen has offered to approach other interested parties eg NDCS to see if a joint presentation of this idea is possible.

Feedback from members is encouraged. Please send your thoughts to Peter Keen at: peter.keenhearing@btinternet.com
